Figure 8s Through Your Legs

Figure 8 through your legs is a fun, flowing movement trick where your dog weaves through centre, out to the side, and loops back around to the front. It’s a great way to build body awareness, coordination, and engagement while adding motion and connection to your training sessions.

This trick works well as a warm-up, a confidence-building exercise, or a way to add variety to your trick training — especially for dogs who enjoy working close to their person.

Training Methods Used

  • Luring

What You’ll Need

  • Small, tasty treats

  • A bit of open space

  • Optional: tall cones or objects (for an alternative setup)

How to Teach It

  • With a few treats in each hand and your dog standing in front of you, drop your hand behind your leg so they move between your legs to meet the lure.

  • As your dog comes through centre, guide them out to one side and curve the lure forward so they loop back around to the front.

  • Release the treat when they complete the loop.

  • Toss a treat away to reset and start another repetition, alternating sides to build the full figure eight.

Troubleshooting

  • Keep your lure low and slow and make sure your dog has 360° of space to move.

  • Break the steps down over 3-5 training sessions.
