Figure 8s Through Your Legs
Figure 8 through your legs is a fun, flowing movement trick where your dog weaves through centre, out to the side, and loops back around to the front. It’s a great way to build body awareness, coordination, and engagement while adding motion and connection to your training sessions.
This trick works well as a warm-up, a confidence-building exercise, or a way to add variety to your trick training — especially for dogs who enjoy working close to their person.
Training Methods Used
Luring
What You’ll Need
Small, tasty treats
A bit of open space
Optional: tall cones or objects (for an alternative setup)
How to Teach It
With a few treats in each hand and your dog standing in front of you, drop your hand behind your leg so they move between your legs to meet the lure.
As your dog comes through centre, guide them out to one side and curve the lure forward so they loop back around to the front.
Release the treat when they complete the loop.
Toss a treat away to reset and start another repetition, alternating sides to build the full figure eight.
Troubleshooting
Keep your lure low and slow and make sure your dog has 360° of space to move.
Break the steps down over 3-5 training sessions.
