Reward Placement–Reinforcing the Position I Want

This is a quick clip from one of our walks—nothing fancy, just a small moment that says a lot.

I’m feeding Hank while he walks beside me in heel position.
Not because I need him glued there… but because I’m being intentional about where the reinforcement is happening.

This kind of work doesn’t stand out. It’s quiet. Repetitive. Easy to overlook.

But it’s doing more than it seems.

What You’ll See

  • Hank walking beside me in heel position

  • Food delivered while he’s in motion

  • Reinforcement happening right where I want him

A Few Things Worth Noticing

  • I’m feeding while we’re moving, not stopping to reward

  • His position stays consistent without me cueing it

  • There’s no correction if he drifts—just information through placement

Why These Moments Matter

This is how position actually gets built.
Not through asking for it over and over. But through clear, repeated reinforcement in the exact place you want your dog to be.

Over time, that placement starts to do the work for you.
The dog learns:

  • where to be

  • how to stay there

  • how to move with you

It’s also a good reminder that reinforcement isn’t just what you use.

It’s where it happens.
